IV Sedation

  • During the consultation, sedation and the treatment are discussed in depth and blood pressure and oxygen levels are checked as well as any contraindications.
  • Procedural IV sedation is a medical technique that involves giving a patient a calming drug – usually midazolam or Propofol, directly into a vein in your arm. The drug relaxes you and makes you feel calm and sleepy. During the procedure, your healthcare provider monitors your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels to ensure the patient is safe. Procedural sedation is a medical technique used to calm a person before a procedure. It involves giving you sedatives or pain pills, usually through an IV line in your arm.

Your Treatment Journey

Step 2

Your dentist will prepare the required tools and machinery for sedation. Once this is prepared, your dentist will insert a needle that is attached to a tube containing either midazolam or Propofol, into your vein in your arm. Once the calming drug has entered your vein, you will begin to feel drowsy, calm, and sleepy. Once you are under sedation your dentist can proceed with your treatment. Sedation can be used for any dental treatment – including a scale and polish. Dental sedation can last anywhere between 2-8 hours.

Step 3

After you’ve had sedation, and finished your treatment, you’ll recover in-practice to allow its effects to subside. Your dentist will wait to ensure you feel fully recovered before discharging you. We recommend not driving for 24 hours after sedation, so you should arrange for someone to pick you up and take you home. And you should avoid exercise for 24 hours.

Will sedation help with pain?

Is sedation dentistry safe?

How long does the sedation last?

Typically, patients who undergo sedation feel the effects for one to six hours. It varies because we administer an appropriate dosage for your procedure, so you are not sedated longer than necessary.

If I’m sedated, will I remember anything about my dental treatment?

With IV sedation dentistry, patients don’t remember anything because they are in a deeply sedated state.

Can I drive myself home after the procedure?

With nitrous oxide, the effects of the sedative wear off quite quickly as soon as the mask is removed, so patients who receive laughing gas can often drive themselves home. Those who receive IV or oral sedation will not be able to drive themselves home and should arrange for a ride afterward.

What are the side effects of sedation?

Side effects of sedation are minor. Most commonly, patients may experience:

  • Dry mouth during or after the procedure
  • Brief amnesia right after waking up
  • Nausea or headache
  • Grogginess
